Motorola Milestone/Motorola Android 2.0 launches in Europe with MOTONAV turn-by-turn navigation which is free for the first 60 days, but then a license fee kicks-in and loses free turn-by-turn navigation from Google, because in europe this feature turn-by-turn navigation from Google is not ready for primetime in Europe yet.

With kids trading in their books and backpacks for summer camp and beach towels, it’s the right time to explore Usage Controls , a comprehensive set of tools from Verizon Wireless that helps parents better manage their children’s wireless experience.

Usage Controls give parents the ability to comfortably and confidently provide wireless service for their children by managing how many text messages they are sending and what content they are viewing or understanding if they are accruing additional costs. Whether changing the voice or text allowances or time of day restrictions to better fit a summer schedule or checking out the content filters available for video, music and games, Usage Controls help parents control their wireless service and how others on Nationwide Single Line plans and Family SharePlans use their phones.

Parents can stay on top of voice and data usage levels, helping avoid unexpected charges or overages. Since Usage Controls launched, the most popular transactions include editing time restrictions and adding blocked numbers to a line.

Parents and account owners can easily access Usage Controls through the My Verizon Web site (www.verizonwireless.com/myverizon), then change or update the settings under the Usage Controls tab. With the service, parents can:
  • Set allowances for voice minutes and receive free text messages when a user is nearing and when they have reached the allowance
  • Set specific limits for text, picture, instant and video messaging as part of pay-as-you-go or message bundle plans – and receive free text messages alerting them when they are close to the threshold and when they have reached it
  • Set time of day restrictions for data use and messaging
  • Create lists of “trusted” and “blocked” numbers (calls to 911 are always allowed to connect)

With the plan, which starts at $69.99 per month for two lines and 700 minutes, customers have the option of adding lines for as low as $9.99 per month. The Nationwide Small Business SharePlan also comes with access to the My Business online account management tool, Small Business Specialists and online technical support 24/7.

Well lookey here. Verizon (NYSE: VZ) Wireless has finally gotten around to releasing the almost irrelevant Windows Mobile 6.1 ROM update for customers using the Verizon XV6900 (Verizon's version of the HTC Touch). Of course, most HTC Touch owners unfortunate enough to find themselves under Verizon's thumb have likely already upgraded their Verizon XV6900 with the Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional ROM that was leaked a couple months ago.

The Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional ROM should enable EVDO Rev. A data speeds, threaded messaging, VZNavigator, and compatibility with 16GB microSDHC cards on your Verizon-branded HTC Touch. Unfortunately, support for VZNavigator means the GPS hardware within the XV6900 can only be used through the Verizon's premium navigation service. Although, a little hacking magic might allow you to free your XV6900's GPS receiver from Verizon's mis-guided grip.

In all reality, we really didn't expect Verizon to get their Windows Mobile 6.1 update out to XV6900 owners before Mobile World Congress in Frbruary. So, it's nice to see Verizon beating our expectations, regardless of how low we set the bar…

Grab your Verizon XV6900 Windows Mobile 6.1 update here.

For those of you still hoping for Verizon to change their minds regarding GPS on phones, don’t lose hope. Currently, Verizon is said to be working with Windows Mobile device manufacturers for a software update that would enable the standalone GPS chips inside phones while retaining their ability to support assisted GPS.

So in the future, not only will you be able to navigate with assistance from Verizon’s cellular network, but also with the use of your device’s standalone GPS chips. This is still a work in progress, but it’s good to now that Verizon is not ignoring the issue, which has been affecting a lot of their customers for quite some time now.
Verizon has confirmed this through an e-mail to users that have campaigned for them to open up said feature in phones, the full text of which is below:

Verizon Wireless, like all carriers, orders devices to meet certain specifications inclusive of features. Each of these specs is tested to determine if it meets our performance goals. There are instances when the phone will pass our extensive testing process but a specific feature may not meet the standard. We will often choose to introduce the phone without that feature but ask that the manufacturer come back to us with revised software that has to be tested to make sure the service works the same across our entire wireless footprint –from Maine to Hawaii. In the case of open standalone GPS, we are partnering with the Windows Mobile device manufacturers to provide a software upgrade that will add this capability to the existing assisted GPS capability. This is a complex development project to provide open standalone GPS while maintaining the assisted GPS capability with the level of performance and security that our customers expect. The recently introduced Windows Mobile devices including Omnia, Saga, and Touch Pro are targeted to add open standalone GPS in the 1st half of 2009.

Steve Schwed
Verizon Wireless
HQ Executive Relations Supervisor

So, Omnia, Saga, and Touch Pro owners should be the first to watch out for this software update to be made available. As well as owners of other Windows Mobile-powered and GPS-equipped handsets in Verizon’s line up.

In a fit of trying to squeeze more money out of their web-hungry customers, Verizon Wireless plans to remove all options for Pay As You Go Data plans starting November 14th. A document containing Verizon's plans for the future in detail has been leaked, and with the information it carries, many will not be pleased.

The exclusive document states: Pay As You Go, 1X Block and 10MB data plan/feature not available for new PDAs/Smartphones devices launched on/after November 14, 2008. And you can take that as it is. Verizon will no longer offer PAYG, 1X Block or 10MB data plans starting on that fateful day. There is a bit of good news, however, in that users of old phones currently using a PAYG data plan won't be forced to upgrade.

But if those old phone users do upgrade, they will then have no choice but to sign up for a new data plan starting at $29.99 per month.

Also mentioned in the document is an upcoming mandate for plans with select Mobile Web 2.0 phones in 2009. Clearly, this is a ploy to take advantage of users who are currently taking advantage of their phone and network's mobile offerings, which not many will like, but will have to endure anyway. Well, you can always bail, if you want. But that's just a suggestion.
