Vodafone are the latest UK network to leap aboard the iPhone sales train, joining Orange, Tesco Mobile and O2, whose exclusivity to sell the phone ended earlier this year.

Vodafone have announced that the iPhone will be on sale from 14th January 2010, but it doesn’t look like there is going to be much competition on pricing.

The Chief technology officer at Vodafone, Jeni Mundy, explained that the company are not trying to offer the cheapest iPhone but is more concerned with offering the best service. To do this, Mundy stated ‘ We worked closely with Apple and talked to other mobile operators around the world about their experiences with the iPhone to make sure we can meet the demands of users on our network when we launch the product.’

The company have detailed a range of business tariffs starting from £30 going up to £55 on a 24 month contract. These offer unlimited Wi-Fi and calls to landline, and 250 texts per month as standard. The main difference is the number of minutes which ranges from 600 on £30 tariff to 2,000 on the £55 tariff.

The business and consumer contracts come with a 1GB data download limit on BT’s openzone network.

It has also been suggested that a lot of small and large businesses are considering the iPhone for staff, and Apple are keen to push for this as well. Mundy also stated ‘For sales, delivery and logistics staff, the iPhone can help provide applications that enable access to real-time data which can prove invaluable to any company. ‘

Orange offering the Apple iPhone 3G and 3GS later this year It’s not much of a stretch to imagine these two events are linked, as when Apple chose O2 to exclusively sell the iPhone, the carrier occupied the highest step, now they are set to be replaced by T-Orange, or whatever the name will be, Apple have signed on the dotted line with them, a deal no doubt made easy by Orange already selling the iPhone in France.

The news also comes on the back of rumours O2 would be losing exclusivity when their contract ran out on November, and one can also wonder as to the impact O2’s Palm Pre exclusive deal had on their Apple relations.

At this stage, Orange have only released the fact the iPhone will be available with them via their own shops and ’selected high street partners’, with nothing concerning phone pricing, tariffs or the final release date as yet. It’s also worth noting that Orange do not mention anything about exclusivity, so expect O2 to still offer the phone for sale too.

New iPhone 3GS Emits a High-frequency Tone

A new problem has been discovered with the sound files on the brand new iPhone 3GS. The iPhone emits a high-frequency tone (around 15KHz) after playing the unlock sound, SMS sound, etc. Since most people cannot hear frequencies as high as that, it has gone unnoticed for a while. However, there is no high-pitched tone when the phone is set to vibrate. We hope that Apple will fix this issue very soon.

iPhone 3G S will be available in Canada in just a matter of days, and if you’re still on the fence on whether to get one or not, this latest info might help you finally land a decision.

iPhone 3G S

This is direct from Rogers as posted by BGR. Read on and find out what how you can land yourself an iPhone 3G S without actually spending that much.

There has been a lot of excitement around the new iPhone 3G S and we wanted to recognize the early adopters who helped make the iPhone the hottest-selling handset in Canadian wireless history. We will be discounting the price of the iPhone 3G S by between $250 and $500 to provide savings to many of our iPhone customers.

What this means is that eligible iPhone owners can acquire the iPhone 16GB 3G S for as low as $199 or the 32GB for as low as $299 until July 31, 2009.

For Fido customers, we’re offering the Fido Rewards iPhone 3G S promotion. This enables iPhone customers to redeem FidoDollars towards a new iPhone 3G S with an additional $100 top-up from Fido.

For customers who don’t qualify for these extra savings, we are pleased to offer Rogers Wireless customers the iPhone at our cost on rogers.com. This cost - $580 for the iPhone 3G, $680 for the iPhone 3G S 16GB and $780 for the iPhone 3G S 32GB – represents the price we pay for the device plus a nominal fee for the SIM card. Customers can access these devices at retail locations for just $19 more for the three devices.

We’re also happy to announce that Rogers and Fido are extending the 6GB/$30 data promotion until July 31. This offer is valid for customers on a new or existing iPhone plan or customers buying an Android-powered HTC Magic or HTC Dream.

Five ways to save

1) For Rogers Wireless customers who bought an iPhone 3G between July 11 and Sept. 30, 2008, and with an average monthly spend of at least $100, Rogers will provide $500 off the cost of an iPhone 3G S. This special offer expires July 31, 2009 and comes with the addition of a one-year term to the customer’s existing service agreement.

· 16GB 3GS $199
· 32GB 3GS $299

2) For Rogers Wireless customers who bought an iPhone between July 11 and Dec. 31, 2008, but aren’t eligible for the above offer, Rogers will provide $250 dollars off the purchase of an iPhone 3G S. This special offer expires July 31, 2009 and comes with the addition of a one-year term to the customer’s existing service agreement.

· 16GB 3GS $449
· 32GB 3GS $549

3) All Rogers Wireless customers can upgrade to the iPhone 3GS at our cost at Rogers.com, or for a suggested retail price of just $19 more than our cost through our retail channels.

· 8GB 3G $580/$599
· 16GB 3GS $680/$699
· 32GB 3GS $780/$799

4) Fido customers can take advantage of the Fido Rewards iPhone 3G S promotion:
· Use FidoDollars towards the purchase of a new iPhone 3G S
· Fido will top up the FidoDollars amount by $100
· This promotion does not include an extension or renewal of their service agreement.

5) New and existing iPhone customers can take advantage of a limited-time promotion of 6GB of data for $30, now extended until July 31. Other Rogers and Fido data plans will remain the same, including the only national standalone data plan at $25 per month for 500 MB. We know that this is the right plan for most Canadians – 93 per cent of current iPhone customers on a data plan use less than 500 MB of data per month.

As you can see, existing Rogers subscribers can actually get the iPhone 3G S at the same price as new customers just as long as they meet the criteria set above and they sign up before July 31. Likewise, those on Fido can use their FidoDollars to purchase the iPhone 3G S.

we’re more than happy to let you know that Apple’s latest and greatest iPhone firmware 3.0 is now ready for download.

iphone-os-30

This is, of course, free to download for all iPhone owners, but if you’re using an iPod Touch, it’ll cost you $9.95 to upgrade to this new firmware. So what’s the fuss with iPhone OS 3.0? Well, it now comes with cut/copy/paste, MMS and landscape keyboard support not to mention a new Spotlight Search and Voice Memo feature as well as internet tethering. We can’t see any reason why you shouldn’t upgrade to this new firmware. More info here.

activation-death

Unfortunately, based on early reports, we would recommend you holding out for a couple of days first before doing so. Apple has, apparently, underestimated the demand for iPhone OS 3.0 that activations for post 3.0 upgrades have started to bog down. As such is the case, we suggest you wait for a day or two to pass by when the situation starts to mellow down so you won’t encounter any hassles in the whole upgrade process. Of course, you can try your luck and upgrade now, but as they say, a little patience won’t hurt.

The new 3 megapixel camera is improved for for low-light photo shoot, and also upgraded with macro mode which is great for close-up shot as close as 10cm. To simply edit and trim the recorded videos, the iPhone 3GS is added with an easy-to-use video editor application. It’s nice, actually.

every mobile phone fans probably know about Apple’s announcement regarding the newest iPhone model that would hit the streets on June 17. Boasting of faster mobile processor, video capture, longer battery life and a plethora of new features, the iPhone 3G S will once again put Apple in the limelight come release date. If you have missed the news and buzz regarding the 3G S, here’s a quick review of what it has to offer us all iPhone users and fans.Design-wise, there will no major differences between the 3G S and its predecessor the iPhone 3G. It’s the same glossy finish, the same position of the essential connectors, speakers, microphone, 3.5mm stereo headphone, power button, volume control and sleep button.

The biggest new features of the iPhone 3G S is of course its faster processor which enables apps to run fast, video capture technology, and longer battery life. The iPhone 3G S supports video capture at 30fps in 640×480 pixels. It supports video formats such as MPEG-4, .mov, .m4v, and more.

Apple also announced that the iPhone will run third-party apps faster than its predecessor does. Likewise battery life has been extended up to 5 hours on 3G and 9 hours on WiFi.

Now here’s a quick rundown of the iPhone 3G S key Specs and Features:

  • 16GB or 32GB Storage
  • 3 MP camera with auto focus, tap to focus, photo and video tagging
  • 3.5-inch (diagonal) widescreen Multi-Touch display
  • Fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating
  • Assisted GPS
  • UMTS/HSDPA (850, 1900, 2100 MHz)
  • GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz)
  • Wi-Fi (802.11b/g)
  • Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR
And the most important information of all - the iPhone 3G S will retail for $199 (16GB) and $299 (32GB).

Apple recently announced the iPhone we all knew was coming - the iPhone 3G S, built for unprecedented speed and enhanced performance. Boasting a brand new built-in processor that operates up to 2 times faster than its predecessor, there’s no prize for guessing what the S stands for.

Read on to learn more about the fastest iPhone ever and details on how you can pre-order yours today!

Let’s begin with the speed then – as you probably already know it’s what the 3G S is all about!

Web browsing and launching applications is up to 2 x faster than the original 3G though Apple have yet to release the specific details for the processor used. With full support for 7.2 Mbps HSDPA connectivity allowing for faster networking and data transfer, the iPhone 3G S really does have the potential to cement it’s place as one of the internet phones on the market.

Away from the speed enhancements, one of the features that has been long overdue an upgrade is the iPhone’s 2.0 Megapixel camera. The iPhone 3G S features a 3 megapixel camera with autofocus and while this wont trouble the likes of the Samsung Tocco Ultra and LG Renoir with their 8.0 Megapixel cameras, the sample images released from Apple do look very impressive. Unfortunately a flash is again absent from the spec sheet though Apple claim the iPhone 3G S features a new and improved low light modes for low light conditions. The camera also plays host to the new ‘tap to focus’ tool that gives you the option to adjust focus and exposure by selecting objects on screen to focus on.

Apple have also finally taken note over a noticeable absentee in previous models by incorporating video recording. Capable of capturing video at 30 frames per second in VGA resolution, the iPhone 3G S also allows you to trim down your own videos before sharing them via MMS, your MobileMe gallery or YouTube publications.

The iPhone 3G S also includes new 3D graphics support which should hopefully build on the iPhone’s earlier success in mobile gaming. Voice Control also makes an appearance allowing users to make calls and select and play music. How this will accommodate the English language with its many accents remains to be seen but at the very least it’s definitely a step in the right direction.

one of the world’s largest GPS device maker, announced its long-awaited iPhone app at the Apple Worldwide Developer’s Conference. The TomTom iPhone app supports turn-by-turn spoken directions and voice activation for the new iPhone 3G S, announced yesterday.

Besides that, TomTom will sell a customized mounting kit for iPhone, allowing users to mount the iPhone on windshield. The mounting kit also provides a speaker and microphone to the iPhone. However, the kit doesn’t support voice commands for inputting directions.

The TomTom app and the mounting kit will be available in summer of 2009.

First things first; that name. With various titles floating around such as iPhone Video, iPhone V3 and more, the official name proved to be one of the few things nobody could pin down. Score one for Apple. The ‘S’ in iPhone 3G S stands for Speed but this isn’t just marketing jargon, when Apple say Speed they mean it. The iPhone 3GS has a new, more powerful processor built-in which promises faster all round performance. Apple claims that it is up to two times faster than the previous generation: launching messages is 2.1 faster, launching a web page in Safari is 2.9 times faster. It also consumes less processing power, which in turn helps to improve battery life.

The other part of the “S” is the support for the faster 7.2 Mbps 3G standard, over the original iPhone 3G which maxed out at 3.6 Mbps. What this means in theory (network allowing) is faster data transfer meaning web pages will load faster, Apps and music will download faster and video streaming will be a seamless. So with the iPhone 3G S Apple really can list speed as an upgraded feature.

The iPhone 3G S also flexes its muscles with new 3D Graphics support meaning faster and more complex 3D graphics are now a possibility on the iPhone. One of the main upgrades, it would seem, from the original iPhone 3G is power! But thankfully that’s not all. The camera, often the sticking point for potential owners, gets a long overdue upgrade from 2 to 3 Megapixels. The new improved camera offers images at a maximum of 2048 x 1536 pixels over the original iPhones 1600 x 1200 pixels. But as any camera enthusiast will tell you, it’s not all about the Pixels so you’ll be reassured to see the iPhone 3G S now includes Autofocus, the new tap to focus feature which also lets users tinker with white balance and new and improved macro and low light modes.

What’s more, with the iPhone 3G S you will finally be able to record video! The iPhone 3G S shoots at an impressive 30 frames per second in VGA resolution with auto focus, auto white balance and auto exposure. Apple have also confirmed that a host of editing facilities will compliment the new video recorder letting you trim videos and then upload them straight to video. Again, one of the major criticisms of the original iPhone was the lack of video capture but with the iPhone 3G S it’s been well worth the wait.

Another much rumoured feature that you’ll be please to see has made it into the iPhone 3G S is the digital compass. The inclusion of a digital compass means that the iPhone 3G S can now tell which way it is being pointed opening up the possibility for true turn by turn satellite navigation; an Apple approved Tom Tom app is already in the works and should be available to download when the new iPhone launches!

Elsewhere, the numbers speak for themselves; the iPhone’s maximum memory capacity has now doubled to 32GB with a 16GB version also available from launch (the 3G launched in 8GB and 16GB flavours). Battery life has also been improved with the iPhone 3G S offering up to 12 hours talk time compared to the originals 10 hours, 9 hours using Wi-Fi compared to 6 for the original, 30 hours of audio up from 24 and 10 hours video compared to the 7 for the original iPhone 3G. And despite the impressive boost in battery life and features all round, the iPhone 3G S is a mere 2 grammes heavier than its predecessor at 135 g and comes in at exactly the same dimensions measuring up at 115.5 x 62.1 x 12.3 mm.

Palm Pre had a good first weekend, selling over 50,000 units and generating quite a bit of hype. On Monday, though, Apple proved who’s boss and came out with all guns blazing. Say hello to the Apple iPhone 3G S.

The “S” stands for Speed, i.e. in terms of a faster processor as well as support for the faster HSDPA network (7.2Mbps). Other than that, the new iPhone 3G S looks and feels identical to the current iPhone 3G. This is what you get :

- a better camera (3.2 megapixels, with auto focus, auto exposure, and auto white balance). Video capture at 30 fps (frames per second), and geotagging is supported for photos and videos.
- better graphics (3D video acceleration in hardware)
- fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating for the touchscreen
- magnetometer (digital compass)
- voice control
- Nike+ support
- better battery life

What you don’t get :
- a second front facing camera
- faster WiFi (802.11n)

The iPhone 3G S will be available in most countries by June 19th. Pricing is set at $199 for 16GB version and $299 for 32GB version, subject to contracts of course.

And the rumour of the $99 iPhone? It’s true. Apple is still selling the plain jane 8GB iPhone 3G as an entry level phone.

During Apple’s WWDC (World Wide Developer’s Conference) keynote, they also announced a refreshed MacBook line (more unibody goodness, swapping Express Card for SD, and integrating the 13inch MacBook into the Pro line). Apple’s new operating system Snow Leopard also went into Gold Master (i.e., ready for production) with an upgrade price of just US$29.

And what of the Palm Pre? Apple did take a few digs at the competition, most notably in the number of apps available in the App Store. The score : Palm 18, Apple 50,000.
