With the summer fast approaching, whilst most of you will be digging out your passports and suitcases for that precious week in the sun, here at the mobiles blog we’re eagerly anticipating the slew of new phones that are set to launch over the next few months. So with this in mind, we thought we’d have a quick round up of what’s on the horizon…

Samsung i8910 HD

The Samsung i8910 HD is truly a multimedia masterpiece. A touchscreen phone that uses a massive 3.7 inch AMOLED display, the stand out features is 720p high definition video recording, a first for a mobile phone. Other nice additions include an 8.0 Megapixel camera packed with extras such as face, smile and bink detection, auto focus and geo-tagging, built in GPS, HSDPA and Wi-Fi connectivity and 8GB of internal memory (plus a memory card slot). The phone runs on the latest touch sensitive Symbian operating system promising an intuitive user experience and 1000’s of downloadable apps. Set to launch later this month, the i8910 HD is definitely a good bet for phone of the year.

Sony Ericsson W995

The Sony Ericsson W995 is a Walkman phone with a difference; it takes photography seriously. Previously just an after thought with Walkman phones, the W995 brings photography to the forefront with an 8.1 Megapixel camera loaded with extras such as face detection, an image stabiliser, Geo-tagging and Sony’s BestPic application. Let’s not forget though, the W995 is first and foremost a Walkman phone meaning alongside the latest version of the popular Walkman player, you get support for MP3, AAC and MPEG4, TrackID, Shake control and SensMe (set up playlists by mood). HSDPA, Wi-Fi and GPS round off the specs for the most powerful Walkman phone released and, as the only non touchscreen phone in our list, the W995 is surely the phone of choice for keypad purists.

LG GD900 Crystal

You have to see it to believe it. That’s the tag line for the new LG GD900 Crystal and they’ve definitely hit the nail on the head. The GD900 Crystal features a slide out keypad that is completely transparent. As if this wasn’t enough, the keypad is also touch sensitive allowing you to use it for navigation and uses gesture control to open up shortcuts. Still not impressed? Well 3.0 inch TFT display is also fully touch sensitive featuring multi touch support, whilst the GD900 also features an impressive 8.0 Megapixel camera with auto focus and face detection, HSDPA and Wi-Fi connectivity, support for DivX video playback and runs on LG’s new S-Class 3D user interface (currently wowing owners of the new LG Arena) which promises a slick and user friendly interface. Set to launch in June, this one’s a little bit special!

Nokia N97

What can we say about the N97 that hasn’t already been said? All you need to know is that it’s coming this June and it’s going to be huge. Oh alright we’ll elaborate a bit. The first member of the Nseries to feature a touchscreen, the 3.5 inch display supports handwriting recognition and has a built in accelerometer to rotate the screen when it’s held on its side. Running on the new touchscreen Symbian OS, the N97 slides out to reveal a full QWERTY keyboard which will compliment the N97’s social networking capabilities. The N97 lets you put shortcuts to all your favourite social networking site on the interactive home screen; been poked on facebook? Find out who it is straight away on your N97. With Nokia really bigging up the N97’s social networking ability, it’s a relief to see that they’ve not forgotten about the other important things; 5.0 Megapixel camera with a Carl Zeiss lens, HSDPA and Wi-Fi connectivity and a huge 32GB of internal memory all make the cut. One of the most eagerly anticipated phones in the list, looks like we’ll only have to wait till June to see if the Nokia N97 lives up to the hype.

LG GC900 Viewty Smart

What’s this? Another LG on the horizon? A late addition to the list, the LG GC900 Viewty Smart is the successor to the hugely popular (and rightly so) KU990 Viewty. The GC900 gets its Smart name from the impressive range of camera features on offer. Intelligent shot provides automated scene recognition, multi face detection recognises several faces in a single shot, touch shot lets you sharpen certain areas in the viewfinder and smile shot only captures an image once your subject is smiling (meaning moody teens will be invulnerable to your camera!). Away from the Smart camera, the GC900 follows in the Viewty’s footsteps as a touchscreen phone with a 3.0 inch display though this time running on the new S-Class UI. Other features include HSDPA and Wi-Fi connectivity, built in GPS, DivX and Xvid support, 1.5GB of internal memory and a memory card slot. Penciled in for late June, can the Viewty Smart stake a late claim for best touchscreen phone?
